A common misconception is that a custom home overall costs more than a predesigned model from a mass builder. In general, custom homes DO end up costing more than a "cookie-cutter" house but this is because of the upgrades that the customer often requests. Item for item, however, a custom home can cost very close to the same price as a mass-production home.
